The short answer
Function Health makes broad laboratory testing and clinician-reviewed insights accessible at a comparatively low membership price. Optimability is a higher-touch service for people who want testing connected to ongoing decisions, accountability, and practical support.
Function can help answer, ‘What do my biomarkers show?’ Optimability is designed to keep answering, ‘What should change today, who will handle it, and did it actually work?’
What Function Health actually provides
Function’s published membership includes more than 160 lab tests annually, testing twice a year, explanations, action items, clinician review, and results tracked in one place. Members can also connect supported wearables and add imaging at member pricing.
Function states that it does not offer medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Its FAQ does not describe a dedicated coach running your nutrition, training, meals, travel, and calendar. The product is strongest as an accessible testing and information layer, not as a substitute for an operating team.
Where Optimability is different
Optimability is built for the work that begins after testing. It connects diagnostics, nutrition, training, sleep, and recovery to the decisions a founder or team member has to make during a real week.
The plan is organized around workload, travel, available time, and recovery. Depending on the agreed service, that can include coordinating tests and providers, adapting training, and arranging prepared meals or chef support. The aim is to remove the operational friction that causes good recommendations to be ignored.
Optimability’s founders are health and fitness operators, not physicians. Medical assessment and treatment remain with appropriately qualified clinicians; Optimability coordinates the wider system and helps put the resulting plan into practice.
The practical difference
| What you need | Optimability | Function Health |
|---|---|---|
| Primary value | Coordinated implementation around health and performance. | Broad, accessible lab testing with clinician-reviewed insights. |
| After the results | Connects findings to nutrition, training, sleep, recovery, and ongoing adjustments. | Provides explanations, action items, a clinician summary, and result tracking. |
| Human support | A team helps coordinate the plan and its execution. | Member chat is available, but Function says it does not provide medical advice. |
| Daily logistics | Can coordinate providers, scheduling, travel adaptations, and meals depending on service. | The member arranges any outside coaching, treatment, meal preparation, and training support. |
| Best suited to | People who want responsibility and follow-through taken off their plate. | Self-directed people who primarily want affordable access to more health data. |
Questions that reveal what you are actually buying
Ask each company to walk you through an ordinary week, not only its testing menu. The answer will show whether you are buying information, medical care, or a system that also helps you execute.
- After the results arrive, who turns them into a plan for next Tuesday?
- Who adjusts food and training when work, travel, or recovery changes?
- Are meals merely recommended, or is preparation actually arranged?
- Who coordinates my existing doctor, trainer, chef, and other providers?
- Which services are included, and which require a separate fee or provider?
Which is the better fit?
Choose Function when you are comfortable interpreting the guidance with your existing clinician and organizing the next steps yourself. It offers a large amount of testing for the price.
Choose Optimability when information is not the bottleneck. If you want someone to connect the data to your calendar, food, training, travel, and recovery—and keep adjusting the system—Optimability is solving the larger operational problem.
